So we've reached the final quarter of the year and get our fall update from Nintendo. It was quite the surprising 45 minutes to watch. We got plenty of new information on games that were already announced, which was expected, but we got a few surprises that really raise my hopes for Nintendo's new growth and direction.
A link below to the actual Direct if you want to watch
Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon
I'm very happy they got this news out of the way first, not that i personally am unhappy about the release of these games, but i've always been weird when Pokemon games are released yearly. However, Pokemon Sun & Moon were a great success, and the Alola Region games easily became a lovable set in the series, so the idea of sequels to these games wasn't farfetched.- Alola Returns!
- So with the new light-sucking Ultra Beast/Legendary Pokemon Necrozma they've seemed to change the story drastically, It seems that this weird new Dark type Legendary has absorbed Solgaleo and Lunala fusing into some pretty cool looking Legendaries.
- New areas such as the Pikachu valley, and a mentioned Surfer area have been added as well as "new establishments" to get new clothes for yourself, which was a pretty cool addition that they've added in these new modern day pokemon and i'm personally glad they are adding more clothes, the personalization in "Sun & Moon" was pretty great so yes, please, make it better.
- Pokemon "new" 2DSXL
- IF I HAD $200 TO SPEND I WOULD GET THIS IN A HEARTBEAT I MEAN LOOK AT IT!
Nintendo 3DS Highlights
The presentation is continued with the recently introduced "highlights" in which they shortly go over a good list of games giving them just enough time to make an impact with the audience without going overboard on information on the game, so in similar form here's a short list of the games announced for this upcoming season on the 3DS
- Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga & Bowser's Minions
- One of the few in this list i'm super excited for, this remake of an amazing GameBoy Advanced Classic is making a return, with updated visuals and a new story to look into as you play as bowser's minions who in the background of the entire game, were constantly referenced to be having a hard time trying to save their villianous lord.
- Kirby Battle Royale
- Since it's Kirby's 25th anniversary this year a new arena fighting Kirby game is coming out for the 3DS, basically kirby's fight, I love kirby but this for sure isn't a purchase for me. Not that it looks bad but rather it looks lackluster, i can't see myself spending $40 on a game of kirby's fighting each other. However if you're interested pick it up, there's online battling and even a single player story mode to keep a good kirby fan entertained.
- Yo Kai Watch 2:Psychic Specters
- Personally have never played the "YoKai Watch" series, it seems to have grown and this is apparently the best entry in the series. I might give it a go at this strange Pokemon/Ghostbusters fusion this year
- Layton's Mistery Journey
- The next entry in the Professor Layton series starring his daughter. These have always been cool mystery puzzle games so if you're a fan, for sure check it out.
- Minecraft for the "New" 3DS
- Minecraft is on literally every digital platform now. I thought the processor on the 3DS couldn't handle it but it seems i've been proved wrong! honestly this is seeming like the best portable version of Minecraft next to the Switch Version.
- Mario Party:Top 100
- a collection of the best Mario Party Minigames from all 10 console installments, a good game if you want a time killer to play with friends on the 3DS
- Metroid: Samus Returns
- The widely anticipated remake of Metroid 2 gets a good overview of the new graphics and gameplay. Looks fun for sure, hopefully this can keep Samus on the Nintendo map.
- ATLUS RPG Journey to the West
- This was a short announcement on the next few games from big RPG publisher ATLUS as they announced a few western releases of more obscure Japanese RPG's coming to the west, Including Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux a game i've heard plenty of but i never played the original DS release of. If you enjoy deep story rich JRPG's that make you contemplate existence, i would look into these.
- Fire Emblem Warriors
- This new Fire Emblem/Dynasty Warriors crossover was announced earlier this year for the Switch but i guess it was inevitable since 2014's Hyrule Warriors got a 3DS release a year and a half later.
Switch news
- Xenoblade Chronicles 2
- This hugely anticipated sequel got a good 9 minutes of the presentation where they showed more Lore of the vast world that they are introducing, as well as an in depth look into the battle system and characters.
- Personally, i'm going to see how this game pans out, it's a game with plenty of content and rich story as the prior Xenoblades have been. But I've never given the games my time. They are huge expanding games with beautiful visuals, Breathtakingly varying areas, and plenty of quests and content, but I'm very weird about Single Player MMORPG's.......which is the best way i can describe such huge games, not that being a large and immersive game is a bad thing but can be intimidating.
- Not only did they announce a "Special Edition" release with art book and album but they also announce the Special Edition Switch Pro Controller which if it's anything like the Splatoon 2 Edition Controller this one is going to be a buy for any fan of Xenoblade.
- Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga & Bowser's Minions

MARIOOOOOOOO ODYSSEEYYYYYYYYYUYYYYYYYYY
Of course, they ended the presentation with a good, long update on possibly the biggest game of the year Super Mario Odyssey, the new open 3D Mario game I've been personally waiting for since Super Mario Sunshine.
- Cappy, a hat
- Cappy is Mario's new friend who is basically a....hat...ghost? He becomes Mario's Signature Cap(haha get it?) that Mario can throw to use as a platform, boomerang, but most importantly he can now take over other objects and creatures in the game to posses them to figure out different puzzled and gain new abilities.
Mario Possesing a Goomba - More Worlds Announced
- What we want in these open Mario games is a big variety of worlds and plenty of things to do in them, and that wish is being granted; They Showcased quite a few of the kingdoms we're going to be visiting.
- To get these worlds we'll need to fill up our Hat shaped ship The Odyssey with "Power Moons", basically the replacement for "Stars" or "Shine Sprites", and it seems we're going well past the normal 120-135 of each into a much larger number since they will be so spread out and hidden throughout the levels.
- Mario Gear
- New Blood Red Switch Joycons have been announced as well as a (very expected) Mario Odyssey Bundle coming out this holiday
Look at that beautiful hair |
I've tried really hard not to spoil too much for myself while doing this segment for the blog. I want to go as blank minded into this Mario game as possible because i want it all to be a surprise. One thing i have to say though, the game looks beautiful. The environments all pop out so vividly and vibrantly, it just makes the entire game look fun! Super hyped for this
Overall this was a fun Nintendo Direct, there's still a part of me that really wanted Super Smash Bros 4 to be announced for the Switch, but i understand why they haven't. Nintendo want to give all of these new franchises a chance, they are trying to broaden their audience bringing in the developers they have. I'm extremely happy with the Bethesda support as well as the Rockastar support. Maybe we'll get a Fallout 4 on the Switch???? we'll see how this holiday season goes.
